Max McKinnon

I don’t mean it in an arrogant way when I say I don’t think it’s normal that I, a then 17-year-old kid, was a top 1% listener of the Founders Podcast last year. Maybe that explains a few things about me. I have always been a searcher, trying to find sustained happiness. I’m guided by the knowledge that has come from successful founders. For reasons I can’t fully explain, I have always been drawn to art. It has become an obsession, to the point where sometimes I’m not really aware of the world around me. Maybe it’s because the practice of art is the closest I can get to sustained happiness, the buzz that I feel when I’m creating, and I can go forever. I’m not motivated by anything except my burning desire to be a Founder. Now, I may be lacking some humility here, but I’m unapologetically extreme — maybe that’s something else about me, THIS IS MY LIFE were talkign about I have to be uncompromising. Since day one of my art practice, I have been guided by Rick Rubin’s maxim: "To create something truly new, you have to imagine that nothing has existed before." My practice remains, and will continue to be, built around this idea. ’m guided by a long-term vision. To answer the question, “What are my artistic goals?” My answer is this: It’s not to win this competition. I don’t care if no one notices Responsive Architecture for another ten years. I’m still going to be a property developer, property investor, and architect. And if I can’t find someone who can do it better, I may even be a founder — along with all the other roles involved in the birth and life of a structure that I have to say for people to recognize what I want to do. I’m entering this competition because I genuinely feel that I have something to contribute to the world. Hope is not a strategy, instead, by entering my study of Responsive Architecture, as implemented in House 1, artists, architects, property developers, property investors, construction managers, builders, and inhabitants can finally see that architectural design isn’t “designed” — it’s seen, just as I saw a perimeter surrounded by my grandfather’s legacy in House 1. But then again, what do I know? I’m just a stupid 18-year-old schoolboy who taught himself how to do it in merely an outdated computer program soon to be replaced by AI — using some books in the school library, YouTube videos, and ChatGPT — without a college degree, employment at a firm, or any status in the business.
Max Mckinnon
Brisbane, Australia
March 2026

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0618/1076/9967/files/ac305e93-37fa-4c70-8ccb-9b4666f7dd16-l_acf95c98-a1e3-4de0-8ff8-99320fd9b12f.jpg?v=1778164653
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0618/1076/9967/files/64142c89-b6a5-46e2-8f19-9ea924b6d7c0-l_6055d930-7c57-46b0-9100-fbb408b66f9f.jpg?v=1778164660
