Harrison Steedman

My name is Harrison Steedman, and I graduated from Grammar in 2023. I have been pursuing art since preschool, exploring countless combinations of mediums and artistic styles. While this has fuelled my creativity, I have never been able to settle on a single medium or personal style, meaning I am always learning something new about the tools I use and how I use them. This flexibility also allows me to take inspiration from hundreds of different artists; I wish I just had enough time to try everything.
Along with the changing mediums, my artistic purpose has also evolved since I began creating. Initially, art was a way to get recognition and compliments on my work but as I have grown older, I have realised how art can be used to make people feel certain ways. When making the works submitted to this competition, I strived to capture emotions or moments in time and share them with the audience: the thrill of a scientific discovery, a film that shifts your perspective on life, or simply the joy of meeting a friendly dog on a daily commute.
A dog in a barbershop is my most recent work, completed in January of 2025 and inspired by my barber of over 7 years. Despite trying other barbers, I have always found my way back to Sacha Gerbac (through three different shops) because he offers more than just great cuts. He has partly shaped the man I am today, especially encouraging me to pursue art. So, when I asked to do a portrait of him, I wasn’t surprised at his response: “Nah, don’t do one of me – do one of Winston”. His French Bulldog, Winston, is his brother in arms and they share a stronger connection than some blood-related brothers I know. Sitting in his throne in the shop, Winston sleepily greets every customer willing to give him a few pats. This painting is my proudest work – I just hope it inspires Sash the way he inspires me.
Reflections of Discovery (November 2024) is the culmination of my experiences studying science at UQ as a first-year undergraduate. Submitted as an artwork for the SCMB Art of Science competition at UQ, I believe it summarises the awe and fulfillment that a new discovery stimulates.
Lastly, Django (April 2024) is a portrait of the protagonist of the movie sharing the same name, which happens to be my favourite of all time. It follows the titular Django, an enslaved man freed by bounty hunter Dr King Schultz. Together, they track down criminals while Django seeks to rescue his wife from the brutal plantation owner Calvin Candie. I believe it is a perfect representation of overcoming adversity in the face of oppression, and truly changed how I view life, and the problems I must adapt to everyday.

You don't know how important something is to you until it's gone.
